Elektor Digital Design your own Embedded Linux Control Centre (E-book)
This book is all about building your own DIY home control system. It presents two innovative ways to assemble such a system: By recycling old PC hardware – possibly extending the life of an old PC, or by using Raspberry Pi. In both cases, the main system outlined in this book will consist of a computer platform, a wireless mains outlet, a controller and a USB webcam – All linked together by Linux. By using the Raspberry Pi in conjunction with Arduino (used as an advanced I/O system board), it is possible to construct a small, compact, embedded control system offering enhanced capacity for USB integration, webcams, thermal monitoring and communication with the outside world. The experience required to undertake the projects within this book are minimal exposure to PC hardware and software, the ability to surf the internet, burn a CD-ROM and assemble a small PCB.

Elektor Digital Acoustics in Performance (E-book)
All you need to know about good acoustics and sound systems in performance and worship spaces! Everyone knows that the ability to hear music in balance and to understand speech is essential in any space used for performance or worship. Unfortunately, in the early 21st century, we find that buildings with good acoustics are the exception rather than the rule. Much of the fault leading to this result can be traced to the widespread perception that acoustics is a black art. In fact, scientific acoustics as developed in the last century is a well-defined engineering practice that can lead to predictable excellent results. A basic, non-engineering understanding of acoustics will help building owners, theater managers, ministers and teachers of music, performers, and other professionals to achieve their goals of excellent acoustics in venues with which they work. Performers having a basic understanding of acoustics will be able to make the most of the acoustics of the venue in which they perform. This book helps those responsible for providing good acoustics in performance and worship spaces to understand the variables and choices entailed in proper acoustic design for performance and worship. Practicing acoustical consultants will find the book a useful reference as well. The level of presentation is comfortable and straightforward without being simplistic. If correct acoustical principles are incorporated into the design, renovation, and maintenance of performance and worship venues, good acoustics will be the result.

Velleman Whadda Madlab Elektronik-Kit (Junior-Theremin)
The Theremin was the first music synthesizer. The Junior Theremin is our, smaller, version of that classic electronic musical instrument. As you move your hand towards and away from the wire aerial, the Theremin responds by changing the pitch of the note it is playing. It can play individual notes as well as varying the tone of a single note. How do you use the theremin? The wire aerial responds to the movement of your hand towards and away from it and changes the pitch of the note it plays, without actually being touched. Junior Theremin works in two modes – continuous and discrete. When you first connect the battery Junior Theremin is in continuous mode. Pressing both pushbuttons together switches between continuous and discrete modes. Discrete mode, as its name implies, plays individual or discrete notes rather than a continuously variable tone. Eight notes over a single octave are available. In discrete mode the two pushbuttons change the octave of the notes. The left-hand pushbutton (marked -) lowers the octave, and the right-hand pushbutton (marked +) raises the octave. The pushbuttons only change the octave so long as they are pressed. In continuous mode the pushbuttons have no effect. Downloads Manual

Elektor Publishing Practical Audio DSP Projects with the ESP32
Easy and Affordable Digital Signal Processing The aim of this book is to teach the basic principles of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and to introduce it from a practical point of view using the bare minimum of mathematics. Only the basic level of discrete-time systems theory is given, sufficient to implement DSP applications in real time. The practical implementations are described in real time using the highly popular ESP32 DevKitC microcontroller development board. With the low cost and extremely popular ESP32 microcontroller, you should be able to design elementary DSP projects with sampling frequencies within the audio range. All programming is done using the popular Arduino IDE in conjunction with the C language compiler. After laying a solid foundation of DSP theory and pertinent discussions on the main DSP software tools on the market, the book presents the following audio-based sound and DSP projects: Using an I²S-based digital microphone to capture audio sound Using an I²S-based class-D audio amplifier and speaker Playing MP3 music stored on an SD card through an I²S-based amplifier and speaker Playing MP3 music files stored in ESP32 flash memory through an I²S-based amplifier and speaker Mono and stereo Internet radio with I²S-based amplifiers and speakers Text-to-speech output with an I²S-based amplifier and speaker Using the volume control in I²S-based amplifier and speaker systems A speaking event counter with an I²S-based amplifier and speaker An adjustable sinewave generator with I²S-based amplifier and speaker Using the Pmod I²S2 24-bit fast ADC/DAC module Digital low-pass and band-pass real-time FIR filter design with external and internal A/D and D/A conversion Digital low-pass and band-pass real-time IIR filter design with external and internal A/D and D/A conversion Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT)

Elektor Publishing Consumer Electronics Repair, Reuse and Recycling
A Combat Guide against E-waste and Throwawayism This book is for anyone who enjoys tinkering with analog and digital hardware electronics. Regardless of the sophistication of your workspace, only basic tools are required to achieve truly satisfying results. It is intended as a reference guide among other hardware repair publications you may have in your library. However, the book goes a step further than most other repair guides in addressing issues in the modern era of discarded electronics called e-waste. E-waste should be put to good use. Producing anything new requires not just precious resources and labor, but also energy to make and deliver it to global retail shelves. Your talents and love of electronics can be put to good use by rescuing and resurrecting at least selected units from this endless stream of e-waste. Examples include either restoring through repair, or salvaging reusable electronic and mechanical components for your next project. Smart tips are provided throughout the book, and much information is tabulated for easy reference. The book expands age-old repair and hacking techniques applied for repair on the workbench into clever methods and applications to achieve effective results with discarded or “non-servicable” electronic consumer products. The final chapter provides real-life examples using all of the previously discussed content in a summarized form for each example repair type.

Elektor Digital Retronics (E-book)
Quite unintentionally a one-page story on an old Heathkit tube tester in the December 2004 edition of Elektor magazine spawned dozens of ‘Retronics’ tales appearing with a monthly cadence, and attracting a steady flow of reader feedback and contributions to the series. Since launching his Retronics columns, Elektor Editor Jan Buiting has never been short of copy to print, or vintage equipment to marvel at. This book is a compilation of about 80 Retronics installments published between 2004 and 2012. The stories cover vintage test equipment, prehistoric computers, long forgotten components, and Elektor blockbuster projects, all aiming to make engineers smile, sit up, object, drool, or experience a whiff of nostalgia. To reflect that our memories are constantly playing tricks on us, and honoring that “one man’s rubbish is another man’s gem”, the tales in the book purposely have no chronological order, and no bias in favor of transistor or tube, microprocessor or discrete part, audio or RF, DIY or professional, dry or narrative style. Although vastly diff erent in subject matter, all tales in the book are told with personal gusto because Retronics is about sentiment in electronics engineering, construction and repair, be it to reminisce about a 1960s Tektronix scope with a cleaning lady as a feature, or a 1928 PanSanitor box for dubious medical use. Owners of this book are advised to not exceed one Retronics tale per working day, preferably consumed in the evening hours under lamp light, in a comfortable chair, with a piece of vintage electronic equipment close and powered up.
